Let’s break it down.
1. Readiness Starts Before You Leave the House
You don’t get to pick the moment when you need to defend yourself. That means your firearm, gear, and mindset must be squared away before you step out the door.
Gear Check: Is your firearm clean, holstered properly, and ready to go?
Attire Matters: Spring and summer bring challenges like lighter fabrics and potential printing—make sure your holster and clothing work together. You don’t want the first time you draw your firearm to be when you are in a dynamic critical situation. Practice dry (no ammunition in your firearm) drawing your firearm before you leave the house. This ensures you can safely, confidently, and efficiently move your cover garments without fumbling when it counts.
Carry Every Day: If you don’t consistently carry, you’re not truly prepared.
2. Mindset: Situational Awareness is Key
Being “ready” isn’t just about having your firearm on you—it’s about being mentally prepared to act.
Stay Alert: Head on a swivel, always scanning your environment.
Trust Your Gut: If something feels off, it probably is.
Avoidance is a Win: The best fight is the one you don’t have to be in—stay aware and make smart choices.
3. Training: If You Don’t Use It, You Lose It
Carrying without regular training is like owning a car but never practicing how to drive. You need to be comfortable and confident handling your firearm.
Dry Fire Practice: Muscle memory is built at home. Draw, present, and fire—no ammo needed.
Live Fire Drills: Train for real-world scenarios. Quick draws, shooting from concealment, and movement drills should be in your rotation.
Drawing from Summer Attire: Drawing from under a T-shirt is different than from a winter coat—practice accordingly.
4. The Legal Side: Know the Law
Warmer weather means road trips, vacations, and travel. Before you cross state lines, be sure you understand local concealed carry laws. Ignorance is not a defense.
Reciprocity Matters: Your CCW permit may not be valid everywhere—check before you travel. You can find reciprocity maps on your state’s Attorney General website, the website of the state that issued your permit, or through your self-protection membership or insurance company’s website or app. Knowing where you’re legally allowed to carry is just as important as carrying itself.
Use of Force Laws: Understand when you can and cannot legally defend yourself.
5. A Ready Mindset is a Confident Mindset
At the end of the day, “staying ready” means carrying consistently, training regularly, and keeping your mind sharp. When you do this, you don’t have to scramble to get ready if trouble finds you—you’ll already be prepared.
Spring and summer are coming, and so are new challenges for concealed carriers. Will you be ready?
