The holiday season brings out the best deals—and unfortunately, sometimes the worst situations. Whether it’s navigating crowded stores, carrying concealed, or managing kids and elderly family members, staying safe should be at the top of your list. Here’s how to shop smart and stay secure this season.

Concealed Carry Options: On-Body vs. Off-Body

On-Body Carry:

  • Pros:

    • Firearm stays secure and within your immediate control.

    • Faster access in emergencies.

    • More challenging for someone else to grab.

  • Cons:

    • Requires thoughtful clothing choices to ensure proper concealment.

    • Can be less comfortable for long shopping trips, especially with layers.

Off-Body Carry (in a purse, bag, or backpack):

  • Pros:

    • Easy to integrate into your wardrobe.

    • Allows for flexibility in holster and carry options.

  • Cons:

    • Higher risk of theft or misplacement.

    • Slower access compared to on-body carry.

    • Requires extra vigilance—NEVER let your bag leave your sight, even for a moment.

Pro Tip: If you choose off-body carry, use a bag designed specifically for concealed carry with a secured compartment. Always practice drawing safely and efficiently from your setup.

Shopping With Kids or Elderly Loved Ones

  1. Keep Them Close:

    • Hold younger children’s hands or use a child harness for busy areas.

    • For elderly family members, take regular breaks and choose quieter shopping hours to reduce stress.

  2. Establish a Plan:

    • Set a meeting point in case you’re separated.

    • Teach kids basic safety rules like saying “no” to strangers and staying in well-lit areas.

  3. Distraction is the Enemy:

    • Keep your attention on your surroundings rather than your phone.

    • With kids or seniors in tow, you’re already juggling enough—don’t let distractions add to the risk.

Parking Lot Safety

  1. Unlock Strategically:

    • Only unlock the driver’s door when approaching your vehicle. This minimizes the chance of someone slipping in a different door.

    • Be quick about loading your bags—don’t linger in the lot.

  2. Check Your Vehicle:

    • Before getting in, do a quick scan of the area, including underneath and around your car.

    • If something seems off, like an unexpected van parked close or someone loitering, wait or get help.

  3. Avoid Suspicious Items on Your Car:

    • If you see papers, notes, money, or other objects left on your car, do NOT touch them. Get in your vehicle, lock the doors, and drive to a safe location before investigating further.

What to Do If You Feel Unsafe

  1. Trust Your Instincts:

    • If something feels wrong, it probably is.

    • If you think you’re being followed, head to a crowded area or a staffed location like a store or security office.

  2. Be Cautious of Strangers:

    • Someone offering help or asking for assistance could be trying to distract you. Be polite but firm, and keep your distance.

  3. Have a Safety Plan:

    • Know who to call and where to go if you’re uncomfortable.

    • Don’t hesitate to alert mall or store security if you feel uneasy.

Digital Safety: Beware of Free Wi-Fi

Public Wi-Fi networks might seem convenient, but they’re an easy way for hackers to steal your personal info. Avoid accessing sensitive accounts or entering payment details on unsecured networks. Use a VPN or your phone’s hotspot for extra protection.

Emergency Awareness: Know Your Exits

Always know how to get out of a building quickly in case of an emergency.

  • Take note of emergency exits when you enter stores or malls.

  • Avoid relying solely on the main entrance—those areas can quickly become bottlenecks.

Hot Items for Theft Targets

Thieves are on the lookout for high-value items like:

  • Small electronics (smartphones, earbuds, tablets).

  • Designer goods and accessories.

  • Popular toys or gaming consoles.

Keep these items discreet when loading them into your vehicle or carrying them in bags.

Stay Alert, Stay Safe

Holiday shopping is no joke, but a little preparation can make all the difference. By staying situationally aware, trusting your instincts, and having a plan, you can protect yourself and your loved ones while still enjoying the season.
